Miale Tubana Mixed Farmers

The 40 small farmers of the Miale Tubana Mixed Farmers Cooperative live and work on the slopes of the eastern Ugandan volcano Mount Elgon and grow coffee beans of the endangered Nyasaland variety.

The collective has always worked with extensive methods such as intercropping and only uses animal and plant fertilizers and pesticides. In the fertile gardens, small quantities of coffee are grown with local fruits, vegetables, tubers and many other local species and in harmony with the surrounding environment. The diversity of plants and the large African shade trees nourish the soil structure and protect it from the strong tropical sun.

This way of working and the resulting cycles represent a fundamentally sustainable structure and enable native animals, plants and people to live together harmoniously.
