Ein Schatz vom Mount Elgon: Unsere Partnerschaft mit den Miale Tubana Bauern

A treasure from Mount Elgon: Our partnership with the Miale Tubana farmers

Since 2020, the Ugandan wind has been blowing as far as Berlin – and it carries the scent of the volcanic soil of eastern Uganda.

At Sortengold, we are proud of our partnership with the Miale Tubana Mixed Farmers Cooperative . This connection is more than just trade for us; it's a contribution to preserving biodiversity and supporting an impressive community of 40 small-scale farmers.

The origin: On the slopes of the volcano

Our partners' home lies on the fertile slopes of Mount Elgon, an extinct volcano in eastern Uganda. Here, in a region known for its lush vegetation, the families of the cooperative live and work. The volcanic soils provide the perfect nutrient base for coffee of exceptional quality.

A rarity in focus: The Nyasaland variety

What makes this project so special for us is the coffee variety itself. The farmers of Miale Tubana are dedicated to cultivating the Nyasaland bean . This variety is considered one of the oldest Arabica varieties in Africa, but is now threatened with extinction .

By sourcing this coffee, we are working together to help preserve this rare and uniquely flavorful variety from disappearing.

Gardens instead of plantations: A model for sustainability

Those looking for vast monocultures at Miale Tubana will be disappointed. The cultivation methods are traditional, extensive, and deeply respectful of nature.

  • Intercropping: Coffee does not grow in isolation. It shares the "gardens" with local fruits, various vegetables, tubers, and other native plants.
  • Natural protection: Mighty African shade trees tower over the coffee bushes. They not only protect the plants from the scorching tropical sun, but their foliage also continuously nourishes the soil structure.
  • Purely biodynamic: Chemical pesticides have no place here. The farmers use only animal and plant fertilizers as well as natural pesticides.

Harmony between man and nature

This approach creates more than just good coffee. It preserves a functioning ecosystem. The resulting cycles enable native animals, plants, and local people to live together harmoniously. It is a fundamentally sustainable system that promotes biodiversity instead of displacing it.

We are delighted to be able to share this rare "variety gold" treasure with you.
